With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this year, the majority of European football will be starting earlier than usual for the 2022/23 season.
The German Bundesliga’s next season will kick off on 5th August and it will be the first big European league to get its teams in action. Therefore, with just around a week until the championship begins, it’s time to assess the teams competing for the next title.
If you’ve been following German football, you shouldn’t be surprised that the top betting sites for Bundesliga favours Bayern Munich to become victorious next season. And for a good reason as the Bavarians have lifted the trophies of the previous ten seasons.
But all good things won’t last forever, right? With teams like RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen playing their best performance, could it finally end Bayern’s dominance?
In this article, we’ll look at the top contenders for the 2022/23 German Bundesliga and the possible sleepers.
Why is Bayern Munich the Favourite Team in the German Bundesliga?
Every football betting site today will likely view Bayern as the obvious frontrunner. The Bavarians have, after all, been the number one team over the past decade and the decades before.
Besides the previous ten Bundesliga titles, the “Die Roten” were also victorious in many other matches in German. This shows how dominant they are over German football.
The one player who has been the key to Bayern’s success is Robert Lewandowski. However, the talented striker has left the club. This is why it will be difficult to predict the team’s performance for next season without their star player in the lead.
Indeed, Bayern still boasts a roster of frighteningly talented players. With experienced players like Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer and young stars Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies, the Allianz Arena is set for more success in the coming years. On top of that, the arrival of Sadio Mane from Liverpool is also massive.
However, we think Nagelsmann’s team will still experience some struggle adapting without Lewandowski. This will fill the other teams competing for the title with a spark of hope.
The Chasing Teams Competing for the 2022/23 Title
Three teams have a chance to challenge Bayern in 2022/23, according to the early betting odds for Bundesliga. Below is our assessment of their chances for next season.
3. Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen ended the last season in an interesting form. Patrick Schick was the star player for Leverkusen last season, scoring 24 goals in 27 league matches and finishing second in the Golden Boot race. Imagine what he can accomplish for 2022/23 if he manages to stay clear of any injuries.
Bayer’s latest achievement was during 2010/11 when they took the runner-up spot. Dortmund was the champion that season, but Leverkusen outperformed Bayern in second place by three points.
Since then, Leverkusen has achieved top-three spots consistently. Gerardo Seoane and his team will be determined to claim the top spot for Leverkusen, so expect an improvement for the “Die Werkself” over last season’s third-place finish.
2. RB Leipzig
The team known as the Red Bulls has recorded four top-three spots from the previous six seasons, including finishing as runner-up in 2016/17 and 2020/21. That’s not bad for a team that gained promotion to the Bundesliga in 2015/16.
Leipzig started indifferently last season as they recorded six losses, three draws and only five wins in their first 14 matches. However, everything changed in December when Domenico Tedesco replaced head coach Jesse Marsch.
Leipzig only experienced four losses during the 20 league clashes under Tedesco, which led them to finish the season on a high note. They’ve even managed to win ten times out of 13 matches between January and April, which proves they’re capable of performing extended winning streaks.
Even though the Saxony outfit has yet to make a valuable transfer this summer, they’ve managed to keep Christopher Nkunku and extend his contract. In our opinion, this is the best decision they could make.
Nkunku contributed numerous goals and assists in all competitions last season, which included 20 goals and 14 assists in the Bundesliga. The 24-year-old Frenchman has the potential to elevate Leipzig’s winning chance for the title.
1. Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund is undoubtedly Germany's second-best football team. They claimed three championships in eight seasons between 1994 to 2002 before they secured back-to-back titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12. Since then, they’ve recorded six second-place finishes, and no team has claimed the runner-up spot that exceeds BVB.
BVB will play without their star striker next season just like Bayern due to Erling Haaland’s transfer to Manchester City. Haaland scored 83 goals out of 89 matches for Dortmund before he recently joined the Premier League defending champion for £54 million.
The Black & Yellows have already acquired a replacement for Haaland – Karim Adeyemi from RB Salzburg. Niklas Sule who will also likely boost the team’s defence.
The continual runner-up finished 13 points behind Bayern during 2019/20, and last season, they managed to close the gap to only eight points. Will the 2022/23 season be the time for them to outperform the Bavarians? We’ll find out soon enough.
Potential Sleeping Teams of the 2022/23 Bundesliga
For the last decade, football fans and the big European sports betting sites have witnessed Bayern dominate the German football space. This causes Bayern’s winning odds of claiming another Bundesliga title to become drastically low.
On the other hand, this causes some extremely high odds to appear for the other German Bundesliga teams. Here are some Bundesliga sleepers that you should consider if you’re feeling lucky and want to go against the odds.
If there’s one sleeping giant in German football, it’s Borussia Monchengladbach.
Gladbach has claimed five top-flight titles within eight seasons during the 1970s. And although they haven’t lifted the trophy since then, we think this historic club will return to the top again.
Last season, they beat Bayern 2-1 in the league and trashed the champions during the DFB-Pokal (5-0). If they consistently beat the top teams next season, there’s an excellent chance for the Foals to compete for the title.
This club’s first and only title for the top-flight is all the way back in 1959. Eintracht Frankfurt made it to a handful of third-place finishes during the early 1990s and hasn’t reached the level of achievement since then.
However, Frankfurt climbed onto a UEFA Europa League triumph during the previous season. The Eagles managed to dispatch Barcelona and EPL’s West Ham United, before they dominated the Scottish powerhouse, Rangers, in the final.
The Union Berlin may be a massive longshot compared to Frankfurt and Borussia. Due to the ridiculously high betting odds across multiple bookies, this club from the capital may potentially mock the Bundesliga betting odds.
However, it’s worth noting that Union is on a steady rise. After they finished at eleventh place in 2019/20, they rose to seventh just a season later in 2020/21. In the previous season, the “Die Eisernen” claimed fifth place and secured Europa League football.
Today, the Union is in a continental competition, as the club manages to attract quality players and continue their gradual improvement. The Bundesliga title may be out of reach, but with the high odds thrown around, it won’t hurt to place a small bet on the underdog.
Our Prediction for the 2022/23 German Bundesliga
So, who’s the next champion for the German Bundesliga title?
The early odds we’ve received suggest another victory for the mighty Bayern Munich. However, with Lewandowski leaving the team and other key players a little over the prime of their careers, the defending champions may be less optimal next season.
However, it’s still difficult to argue with the bookies’ opinion, as Bayern has indeed won the past ten titles. But with the extremely low odds down to 1.2, you’ll need to stake a decent amount of cash to really make your profit worthwhile.
This is why we recommend backing Borussia Dortmund, as they have far more attractive odds.
Dortmund pushed Bayern to their limit during the finals of the 2021/22 season and finished only eight points away from the title. Besides that, BVB is the only team that has managed to break Bayern from their 13 Bundesliga winning streaks.
As they’ve recorded three second-place finishes within four years, Dortmund is all fired up to pounce on Bayern without Lewandowski for the first time in ten years.
