Head to head: Benfica vs Celtic
Review the head-to-head record between the teams, featuring key data to support your match prediction.
Few European ties have ended as strangely as the first one between these two. In November 1969, Celtic beat Benfica 3-0 at Parkhead in the second round of the European Cup and flew to Lisbon thinking the job was done.
Benfica, with Eusébio among the scorers, won the return by the same score, Diamantino levelling the tie with the last attack of the game, and when extra time produced nothing, the referee took both captains into his dressing room to toss a coin. Billy McNeill called heads, and Celtic went all the way to the final. By then a Lisbon radio commentator had already told the crowd Benfica were through, and Celtic’s own chairman complained to UEFA afterwards, which helped push European football towards penalty shootouts.
Lisbon hasn’t been much kinder to Celtic since, with Benfica winning 3-0 at the Estádio da Luz in the 2006/07 Champions League, and on current form the Scots will need more than luck this time.
