The Premier League
It's the highest division of English professional football. The Premier League was formed in 1992 when England's top 22 clubs decided to resign from the Football League as one and created their own League. The Championship
It may be a little confusing, but the Championship is the second-highest division in England but the highest division in the Football League. Even though the Premier League is one of the wealthiest football divisions, the Championship is the richest League that is not part of England's top-flight division.
League One
League One, or known as the Sky Bet League One for sponsorship reasons, was known as the Football League Third Division before 1992. The reason is that it was the third-highest League in England. Then when the Premier League officially severed ties with the Football League, the Third Division became the Football League Second Division.
In 2004, it was renamed League One. Although it's no longer the number one league, it is the third highest League in England and features 24 clubs competing for supremacy.
League Two
England's fourth-tier division is known as the League Two as it lost a bet with the other leagues on which of them was watched the least. It's because of that, or the League above is named League One and other names were already taken.
When the Premier League cut ties with all the other Football League in 1992, The Second Division was named The Football League First Division and so on. In 2004, they all went through another rebrand and The Football League Third Division, initially called The Fourth Division, became League Two.
The National League
The National League, previously known as The Football Conference, is an association league with three different divisions: The National League, The National League North and The National League South. This League sits under the Premier League and the three divisions of England's six tiers of Football Leagues.
